by Richard Marcus

There are several basic things that can be done during the creation and production of video for online use that can really help your videos get a boost in the online world. Each of the taken separately are only a piece of the puzzle and there are many pieces. Here we hope to give you the best tips and practices for the beginning foundation of good video for online distribution so get you on the road to better ratings and a stronger viewer loyalty or higher revenue.

Lights, Camera, Wait a second! - You can't just jump into shooting without truly knowing what you're shooting. That's where a truly good script comes in handy. By taking into account things like the speech rate of the average person (120-150 words per minute) you can put together a script that will not stress the speaker or your viewers. Pacing is key as the video can't proceed too slowly or too quickly. Viewers will either be lost or bored and neither one of those is good for business. So set the pace if you've got someone speaking so that they're not rushed and all the information is transmitted to full effect.

Who's on First? - That old Abbott and Costello bit still gets me even now. But it was all about placement and timing. Storyboarding is where you, as the creative talent behind your online video, get all your placement and timing hashed out before you get on set or location and start muddling about. This is where you can outline exactly what's happening in every piece of the video. We're not talking doing a second-by-second mock-up here but a general visual outline so you know exactly what route you want to take from point A to point B. Once you've got this and your script in hand you should have a pretty clear idea on where you are headed and how you're getting there.

Finishing Touches - Ok so you've got the script written, the actors and props in the proper places and all went well in shooting. Now to put the finishing touches on those videos to make them really pop. Credits, subtitles, and other information can really help you sell your product or keep your viewers informed. Just because it's video doesn't mean you can't use text to push across information like web URLs, email address and other contact information. If you're selling a product don't you want the viewers to know where they can get those products or find out more information? Of course you do!

Making video isn't just about aiming a camera and yelling Action. You've got to have all your proverbial ducks in a row long before you ever step foot on the set so you know just exactly what it is you're looking to shoot. This small bit of planning will really get you far later on down the road and make your online videos look more professional and take less time and they say, time is money.
