But the prospect of the race entering into the ProTour has some of the US-based Continental teams concerned. The International Cycling Union (UCI) has three levels of professional teams: ProTour being the highest, Professional Continental and Continental as the lowest. ...

The Amgen Tour of California will be back for 2011, Anschutz Entertainment Group president Andrew Messick told VeloNews this week.

When asked whether the race, and presenting sponsor Amgen, will be back for 2011, Messick replied pointedly, “Yep.”

A source who declined to be named confirmed that headline sponsor Amgen, which was founded in Thousand Oaks, California, is signed on for the 2011 edition, the final year of a two-year extension of the company’s original partnership agreement.

Messick confirmed Sunday that his team will begin work on next year’s route in early June and plans to pursue the event’s first true mountaintop finish for 2011.

According to Messick, the 2011 race will again feature eight stages. “I don’t think that for 2011 we’ll look at expanding to nine days, but that is possible,” he said. “I think we want to go back to our core team — Jim (Birrell), Chris (Aronhalt) at Medalist and our guys — to see what we want to do for 2011 and what is required from our perspective to continue to take positive steps toward growing this race and making it increasingly relevant.”

The increasing relevance may come in the form of ProTour status for 2011. Messick has made no bones about his company’s intention to take the race to the top level of the sport and it appears that AEG may pursue that status for the next edition. This move would come with the stipulation that all ProTour teams field a squad for the event. It would also mean that Continental teams like Jelly Belly-Kenda and UnitedHealthcare-Maxxis would be excluded.

This makes for a ride that is buttery smooth and fast. A slightly steeper seat tube and a shorter rake on the fork make for pure power transfer and precise handling. The Digger’s steel fork is designed to take the accelerations on the banked corners of the velodrome as well as the rigors of the road. The fork and frame are drilled to accommodate a road caliper brake.

The Tommaso Fit
The Tommaso Digger is designed with a standard track geometry. This means the top tube is parallel to the ground. As with most classic steel frames the seat tube and top tube are almost the same size. This is called the classic “square geometry” and is very easy to fit. We have provided sizing and suggested rider heights for every model of Tommaso bike. Just click the “Size Chart” link to review the information.

The Tommaso Feel
Not all track bikes will see the track. Tommaso has provided a great bike for training on the road and working on the perfect pedal stroke. Riding a fixed bike will shed light on poor pedaling performance within 30 revolutions. Bad pedaling performance is called “pedaling squares.” This means the rider is not supplying even and fluid strokes to the pedals. On a fixed gear bike those “dead areas” of the stroke will be felt by the rider when the gear is fixed. The fixed gear will force the rider to pedal with fluid and constant power all the way around the stroke. The best riders on the road will have the best pedal stroke. Consider the Tommaso Ninja Pro an inexpensive cycling coach. Technical pedaling data aside, the Digger is just plain fun to ride. Of course we would be lying if we didn’t mention our spirited trips to the Irish pub in town.

The Tommaso Digger comes with a 18 tooth fixed cog installed on a flip-flop hub with a single-speed 18t freewheel. This is for those that want to coast or have an addiction to pedaling backwards approaching a stop light. The Digger will arrive to you with a 18t fixed gear. We propose giving the fixie feel a try. It just might change your life…
More About Digger Here

PRESS RELEASE

Los Angeles, CA – Eric Barlevav of the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team Presented by Maxxis is the featured rider in the first of a series of cycling documentaries by Emmy-Award winner Brian Smallwood and his Pro Road Access Productions.

Smallwood followed Barlevav around over the course of several months, including the week leading up to the team’s Arizona training camp, as well as time at camp and through races in Central and Southern California during the early season.

The Pro Road Access documentary featuring Barlevav is the first in a series that will highlight the pro cycling lifestyle. Smallwood featured Barlevav, a rising talent in the U.S., precisely because he isn’t yet a household name.

“As a huge fan of Pro Cycling, I really want to bring my experience and passion to the screen and help more North American Pro riders get into public view,” Smallwood said. “We know who the stars are, the networks do a great job of that. I am trying to bring forward the super talented, though lesser known riders in the peloton. There are some great personalities out there. As a fan, I really want to see them and know their stories.” The show’s mood is fun and relaxed, with lots of music, travel and good living, I take my inspiration from Surfing films.”

The Barlevav feature is intended to be the first in a series of made-for-TV documentaries about the lives of pro road cyclists. Other documentaries in the series will focus on riders from a variety of teams racing at different levels in the United States and Europe.

“I have spoken to many pro’s over the last few years and have received great interest from riders such as Chris Horner, Tim Johnson and Christian Vande Velde.”

Already attached to future projects are Mike Friedman of Team Jelly Belly, the recent winner of the 10 day tour of Korea, and Ivan Dominguez from Team Jamis, Sutter Home. ” I expect more riders to show interest as the show becomes more visible and funding for the series increases.”

Smallwood is currently pitching the weekly series to several networks.

You can see more at: www.proroadaccess.com

About Brian Smallwood

Brian Smallwood is a former pro mountain bike racer with Klein and Raleigh, Category 1 roadie and California state track champion. In 2005, he won an Emmy® for his work on the Fox Super Bowl pre-show.

I just started doing triathlons and it is a good match for my level. After 2 months of research from various websites (triathlon gears, bikes direct, eBay, Amazon, and many others) this is my top choice for a bike under $350 that has all that I need. I got it shipped to me from sports authority (.com) and it arrived in 7 days. My price was $335 total. My local sports authority store offered to put it together for free. I brought the boxed bike down & it literally took them 20 minutes. You can do it yourself w/an Allen wrench and pair of pliers. I did a triathlon w/it the next day and it was a good performing bike. I would suggest in getting the derailleur professionally tuned as mine has some instances to stay between gears. This bike does NOT have paddle shifter. The gear shifter is on top of the handle bars vs. on the brake shifters. This makes it a little inconvience during racing. Add paddle shifter if you plan to race. It is a light bike at 26 lbs. I added a bottle holder for the triathlon. I plan to use it as a commuter & training bike also. Overall I'm happy w/the bike for the performance and price. Especially the price and how sharp it looks compared to all the other intro bikes. There's a thick frame arm (like the $1000s bikes and the forks don't look cheap, plus I like the paint. I'll know more with more miles.

"Nice Start to Road Biking" 2007-05-11
By Jus1Dread (Aberdeen, SD)
I purchased this bike a few weeks ago and there was no information available other than the same recycled product description on 50 different sites. So I figured it was important to add my 2 cents for potential buyers. I don't know what a $1,000+ ride feels like but for $300 I have gotten the road biking experience that I was hoping for.

The bike is visually stunning. It is lightweight (comparatively speaking). It glides through the gears with relative ease and handles high torque sprints with with some integrity. Some assembly is required but very basic. Although, riders with less experience may want to take it to the local bike shop to fine tune brakes , gears, etc. My jury is still out on the tires especially in when leaning into a turn. At 6'2" I am comfortable on the Large version but probably wouldn't be if I were much taller. This was a major concern for me because of the ambiguity of "Medium" and "Large" listed. My estimation using other sources is: Medium - 5'5"-5'10"/30-32" inseam and Large - 5'10"-6'3"/32-34" inseam.

All considered, I'm happy with this purchase. Maybe someday I'll graduate to that $1,000+ ride but this'll do for now.

All Reviews

All Reviews
